Growing public enthusiasm for beaver reintroductions is tempered by landowner concerns that this ‘ecological engineer’ will damage agricultural assets and incur costs. Although Blockchain was designed as a technology to disrupt finance, there is growing recognition that it supports novel approach to social and environmental issues. Ecosulis and WWF PandaLabs are collaborating on ‘Blockchain for Nature & People’ report to highlight areas where blockchain could bring about a step-change in conservation practice. To test blockchain thinking we developed a ‘Beaver Tenancy Association’ model to resettling the species in the UK. Briefly, the model frames beavers as new landscape residents requiring tenancy agreements with landowners. In presenting this model, I will identify key strengths of blockchain relating to verification of identity, smart contracts and tokenization, clarify the relationship between so called ‘oracle’ databases and the blockchain an ‘on-chain’ and ‘off-chain’ actions and illustrate the innovation potential of the technology.
